report has it that a major general has been killed in the crisis
rocking Ugboju district in Otukpo local government area of Benue state.
Major
General Lawrence Ugbo was reported to have been killed in a crisis
which broke out in the district on Wednesday, September 13.
Seven other resident of the district were also said to have been killed while many others were left injured.
Some
of the residents who spoke on the incident said crisis erupted in the
district after some boys from Ugboju attacked a group of individuals
loyal to the former chairman of the Otukpo local government area.
The
former chairman of the local government was reportedly in the community
with some of his loyalists when a different group launched an attack on
them.
The resident said during the attack, the major general was killed and his body burnt.
Confirming the incident, the chairman of Otukpo local government area George Alli said, several persons lost their lives.
Alli however, denied claims that the attacks were political.
He said: “Yes,
I am there as we speak to take victims to the hospital. Several
persons, including Maj Gen Lawrence Ugbo were killed and his body burnt
to ashes. The clash has nothing to do with politics, it was a land
tussle that cause the incident. I will get the whole and pass it across
to you shortly."
The crisis began after some armed herdsmen stormed a neighbouring village of Ajegbe in the area.
The herdsmen were said to have taken their cattle for grazing in destroying farmlands and crops in the area.
