La Liga announce El Clasico date changed to December 23

- To match the lure of the Premier League, El Clasico will be played on December 23 before Christmas

- La Liga president Javier Tebas also announces the game will be played at 1pm to suit Asian audiances

- Real Madrid could however feature in the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup final in Japan on 17 December

La Liga president Javier Tebas has announced that the first El Clasico of the 2017/2018 season between Real Madrid and Barcelona will be played on 23 December.

Tebas announced that the match will kick off at at 1:00pm local time, (1pm Nigerian time).

The clash was initially supposed to be played on December 20 as part of a full midweek round of fixtures before Spain's winter break.

However, given Real could feature in the Club World Cup final in Japan on 17 December, the European champions have been given extra recovery time.

"It will be played on Saturday 23rd at 1:00pm. That is what we have told the television companies," Tebas told Onda Cero radio.

"That week, given it is Christmas time we will have a very special round of fixtures with games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday."To match the Premier League's interest around the world, Tebas has made changes to kick-off times in Spain with Asian audiences in mind.

El Clasico has been played 174 times in La Liga, with Real Madrid winning 72 matches to Barcelona's 69.

However, across all meetings including friendlies, Barcelona have the edge after winning 111 times to Madrid's 99 victories.
